Over the Labor Day weekend, our Animal Rescue Team moved 161 cats and dogs by truck from the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter in Louisiana, located in an area coping with power outages and flooding after Hurricane Isaac.

Delivering these pets to our Emergency Placement Partners for adoption outside the storm zone freed up much-needed space for the animals beginning to swamp local shelters. We are thankful to the Humane Society of Charlotte, N.C., for not only taking Isaac animals into their adoption program, but also for providing their facility as a central location for other placement partners to pick up their own Isaac animals from our transport.

Throughout the weekend, good Samaritans have been bringing in stray animals, and owners have been seeking temporary housing for their pets. Our team members take pictures of each stray animal and tweet the photos for Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter to help owners find their pets.

Other residents are facing the difficult decision of having to possibly relinquish their pets because their homes are uninhabitable.

The Humane Society of the United States is glad to be able to help the shelter and the residents in so many affected communities.

Making a disaster plan now will pay off later when an emergency strikes in your area. If you have a collection of food, water, leashes, a carrier and catbox, a photo of you with your pet, and so forth, you'll be very thankful if you have to evacuate unexpectedly. Sometimes there is very little warning before you have to flee, as with wildfires or tornadoes.

EU Commission asks telcos to share radio waves

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Commission is pushing telecoms companies to share the radio frequencies they use for mobile and broadband services as space runs out for rapidly increasing Web use.

European economies must squeeze more out of the radio waves that carry mobile and Internet technologies if they are to cope with the huge growth in demand for data services on smartphones and tablet computers.

More than 50 percent of all smartphone traffic is routed over Wi-Fi networks and this type of traffic is growing four to six times faster than that on mobile networks, the commission said.

Companies that own parts of the radio wave spectrum after liberalisation in the 1990s consider this capacity to be among their most valuable assets and many have been reluctant to share.

Spectrum is a finite resource so it can carry only a certain amount of traffic. If you have licences for adjacent blocks of spectrum, then you can carry more traffic. If your blocks are separated by a slice owned by someone else, you can't carry as much traffic.

"What we see with spectrum right now is it's broken up in incredibly tiny parts spread across 27 different member states," European Commission spokesman Ryan Heath told a briefing on Monday. "That is obviously not the best way to exploit the resource."

A commission proposal, which is non-binding for now, says that companies that do not own spectrum could negotiate sharing deals with those that do and ask national regulators to approve the agreements.

Such deals could also help operators to recoup some of their network-building costs by sharing spectrum in specific areas or at times of the day when it is vacant, the commission said.

Telecoms companies may be reluctant to share such resources unless they are persuaded of the potential for worthwhile returns, having had to pay high prices at auction for their slices of spectrum.

In some countries steps have already been taken to ensure that companies that do not own spectrum can still market mobile services.

A spectrum auction for very fast fourth-generation mobile licences in France required the three companies that won spectrum in the 800 MHz band to sell wholesale access to mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). The MVNOs can then sell mobile service to consumers without owning their own networks or spectrum.

The 800 MHz band is considered the most valuable because it offers an ideal balance between the ability to carry data, travel long distances and penetrate buildings.

In Austria, Hutchison agreed to a similar accord in an effort to win approval for its acquisition of Orange Austria, which is now under antitrust review.

The European Commission said that it wants to loosen the grip of companies on parts of the spectrum to make room for innovations such as smart meters to record electricity use in buildings.

EU competition authorities forced Everything Everywhere, Britain's largest mobile operator and owner of the Orange and T-Mobile networks, to transfer some of its spectrum to rival Three.

Heath said that the European Commission's proposal would not reduce the quality of service, adding that the hope is for it to spur a secondary market for trading spectrum rights.

Planning a vacation can be one of the more fulfilling experiences for a family, especially if you are going to visit the mountains in Colorado. Lodging should be taken care of as one of your first priorities; however, you will want to know what activities are available in and around the hotel where you are thinking about staying. In fact, hotels are not usually the most desirable places to stay in most mountain play areas. Many places around the ski resorts offer individual villas and condo apartments with all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay away from home. These are excellent choices that should be considered as you begin your planning.

In addition to finding a nice room or apartment to stay in, you will want to know exactly what activities are available at your destination. This particular destination offers a nifty way to get from one mountaintop to another. It is a gondola that will carry you and your friends across the sky, offering an amazing view as you go. And the best part is that it is free with the price of your apartment or villa. On one side you have your temporary ?crib? along with shops, restaurants, and drinking establishments, and on the other side you have enough ski slopes so that you don?t have to do the same run time after time. It is all very entertaining, no matter what your preference is.

One of the most asked questions is how to prepare for the weather. Of course, if you are going for the skiing, you will bring clothing appropriate for that. As far as daily wear when not on the slopes, you should be prepared for daytime temperatures ranging from about 20 to 50 degrees in the winter, with nighttime temps being very cold. If you plan on being outside at night, bring extra layers to keep you warm. Summer temperatures are much different. Daily highs are usually in the 70 to 80 degree range, but, again, night temperatures are much cooler. A jacket or sweater is almost always recommended after the sun goes down. Another high priority question is about activities for children. In the winter there are more gentle slopes where kids can practice their skiing and snowboarding skills, and there are regular classes to teach those sports. Ice skating is also quite popular. In the summer, there are also many ways to keep kids occupied. These include swimming pools, fishing ponds, basketball, and a very nice skate park. You can also enroll them in classes and summer camps while you are there.

What about the elevation? For those who normally live near sea level, this is a concern. After all, the elevation is higher than 8,000 feet where the living quarters are located, and when you ride the free gondola, you will be above 10,000 at times. To deal with these heights, it is recommended that you avoid alcohol for at least the first day. Do not over exert yourself until you know how you will react to the extreme altitudes. If you experience flu-like symptoms such as headache, weakness, upset stomach, light-headedness or trouble sleeping, it could be that you are suffering from altitude sickness. Always drink plenty of water, but if the symptoms persist, you should visit the on-site medical team. They are well equipped to deal with altitude illness.

As you plan your trip, know that the first-class staff is well trained to help make your stay in the mountains one that will be a lasting memory. It is truly a vacation that you will want to repeat time and time again.

For Pink, having baby Willow Sage Hart (who just turned 1!) transformed her from a fast-living rocker to a devoted mom who can?t stop marveling over her daughter.
