A Real Game Changer: OUYA's First Open Source Gaming Console

Digital Sensus - Technology Up-to-date: A Real Game Changer: OUYA?s First Open Source Gaming Console

open source gaming consoleHistorically, the games console market has been a simple one to understand. While leading products such as the X-Box and Playstation have been sold in their millions across the globe, so too independent developers have created unique games and sold these as being compatible with one or multiple gaming platforms.
There is a change on the horizon, however, and one which is set to revolutionize the gaming industry beyond all recognition. This is the development of the first open source gaming platform, which is essentially being designed as an in-built television console that will afford users access to a number of independently created games and titles.A Logical but Game Changing Step: The Evolution of the Gaming MarketThe concept is the brain-child of gaming start up organization OUYA, who managed to raise more than US$ 8 million through the online investment resource Kickstarter. More than 63,000 individual investors backed the concept with a financial commitment, which has not only raised significant capital but also proved the level of interest that exists in the idea of open source gaming. This also suggests that gamers and developers have been waiting for this development for some time, which distinguishes it as a logical and market altering innovation. This open source console is being built on the Android Platform, and is set to retail for just US$99 (?57). This is less than half the cost of the market leading X-Box console, and OUYA hope that the diverse range of games available will offer a broad choice to users and consumers. When you consider that individual games for traditional consoles can cost more than US$50 each, the potential savings of purchasing an OUYA console will serve to both reward existing gamers and encourage new custom from around the world. The Bottom Line: Where the Money LiesFor those of you who are wondering where the money lies, then you need look no further than the business model that supports mobile applications. Like these, the games promoted through OUYA?s own online store will be available for free, so that developers will accrue their revenue through paid up-grades and in game purchases that are made by users as they play. So consumers who are put off by the extortionate fees that retailers charge for existing games can rest assured that they will be able to save money both in the short and longer term with an OUYA console. The only immediate concern surrounds the risk of piracy, which is prominent because of the ease with which software can be uploaded, shared and swapped. Combining the ease of use with security is one that the designers at OUYA are focusing heavily on, as without a satisfactory compromise gamers may well be discouraged by the risk of privacy and online fraud. This risk is something that leading online providers such as Facebook and Apple have managed to negate successfully, however, so there appears to be no reason why OUYA?s game changing innovation can have the desired effect within the market place.Written by Lewis Humphries, technology blogger, UKHost4u.com

PFT: NFL to start season with replacement refs

Philadelphia Eagles Sign Michael VickGetty Images

In January, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie strongly hinted that coach Andy Reid is on the hot seat.? During a Thursday press conference, Lurie basically acknowledged it.

Lurie said he would make no decisions about Reid?s contract until after the 2012 season.? With Reid signed through 2013 and with Reid?s agent, Bob LaMonte, already posturing for an extension, Lurie?s words initially seemed to reflect his intentions regarding the question of whether Reid will get a new deal that applies beyond 2013.

As Lurie continued, it became more clear that, depending on 2012, there may be no 2013.

?I expect a substantially improved team,? Lurie said.? ?We all thought we were a lot better than 8-8 and we weren?t.?

This year, 8-8 apparently won?t be good enough to get Reid one more year.? ?We need substantial improvement,? Lurie said.? ?We have a very good team on paper, and paper doesn?t get you that far if you don?t maximize it.?

Lurie explained that there?s no specific level of achievement that will guarantee Reid?s return.? ?You try to make the best judgment you can after the season,? Lurie said.

There will be no formula regarding the right decision.? ?It?ll be very clear,? Lurie said.

While Lurie acknowledged that another 8-8 season could be excused by a rash of injuries, he reiterated that, generally, ?8-8 is unacceptable . . . that was a really unacceptable outcome.?

Thus, regardless of how it all turns out, Reid is officially on notice.? And Lamonte?s assertion that Lurie essentially has promised Reid a job for life has been completely debunked.

Whether Reid returns for a 15th season depends directly on how the 14th season unfolds.

Obama team launches critique of Ryan before speech

(AP) ? Even before Paul Ryan takes the stage at the Republican convention, President Barack Obama's campaign is seeking to cast the GOP running mate as "out of step" with American voters.

The Obama campaign released an online video Wednesday targeting Ryan as a politician from a "bygone era." The video criticizes Ryan for being the architect of a budget that would overhaul Medicare and for seeking to defund Planned Parenthood.

Ryan, the Wisconsin congressman, is due to address the GOP convention Wednesday night. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney will speak to delegates in Tampa, Fla., and a prime-time audience across the country, on Thursday.

Ryan spokesman Brendan Buck said the video was a "tired and misleading" attack by Obama "in an attempt to divert attention away from his failed record."

Ryan is considered a hero of conservatives. His addition to the Republican ticket has energized voters and even Romney himself. The buttoned-up GOP presidential nominee often appears more at ease when campaigning alongside the youthful Ryan.

Obama is traveling Wednesday to Charlottesville, Va., the last stop on his two-day trip to counter the GOP convention message and to appeal to younger voters in college towns.

Both parties were pushing forward with their political plans while closely monitoring Hurricane Isaac, which arrived in Louisiana late Tuesday. Republicans had largely canceled the first day of their convention as Isaac appeared bound for Tampa. White House officials said they were monitoring the storm but, as of early Wednesday, had no plans to adjust the president's travel plans.

Obama on Tuesday made stops at Iowa State University and Colorado State University, where he reminded students returning to class that they hold a unique power to determine the election.

"I just want all of you to understand your power. Don't give it away ? not when you're young," Obama told about 13,000 people gathered in Colorado. "Right now, America is counting on you. And I'm counting on you."

In Colorado and Iowa, Obama told the students they had much at stake in the Nov. 6 presidential election, panning Romney as a candidate without a plan to move the country forward. "Last week my opponents' campaign went so far as to write you off as a lost generation. That's you according to them," the president said in Iowa, referring to a Romney news release last week that referred to college students as the "Obama Economy's Lost Generation."

"What they hope is that by telling you these things, you'll get discouraged and you'll just stay home this time," Obama said in Ames, Iowa. "But you can't believe it. I don't believe it."

Romney's campaign dismissed Obama's remarks, saying he had "brought the same policies to Iowa that have failed to help young Americans across the country" and left many of them "facing higher unemployment, mounting debt, rising costs and fewer opportunities."

Obama's campaign had hoped the president would speak Wednesday at the University of Virginia. But the school rejected their request, saying it would disrupt classes on the second day of the semester. Obama was instead scheduled to speak in a public area near the university.

Pattaya condominium buyers shift their focus to non-seaview ...

Savvy buyers are moving away from properties with a view of Pattaya?s waterfronts

It has been revealed by property consultancy agency, Knight Frank, that there were about 34,060 condominium units in Pattaya located in about 112 projects, a supply which has accumulated since 2007. The majority of condominium units in Pattaya are non-seaview, representing about 43 percent of the total amount of condos, or about 14,733 units, whereas the amount of seaview and partly seaview condominiums represented 32 percent and 25 percent of the total amount respectively.

The company?s research has shown that the highest demand for Pattaya condominiums is for non-seaview projects, with about 7,995 units sold as of the first half of 2012, representing about 54.3 percent of potential sales. The demand for seaview condominiums in Pattaya saw a sale of 5,110 units, around 47.8 percent of the total available, whereas the partly seaview projects were the lowest in demand, with only 4,072 units sold, or 47.2 percent of those available.

Miss Risinee Sarikaputra, the associate director of Research & Valuation at Knight Frank Thailand said that non-seaview condominium projects that are located in close proximity to the beach, attracted condo-buyers who buy the units for second homes or vacation homes, since the projects can offer attractive properties at a price up to two times lower than that of a project next door which provides a seaview.

Miss Risinee added that smart investors are paying attention to off-beach, non-seaview condominium projects due to selling prices which are cheap and will be able to gain more capital appreciation. Secondly, in buying to let, these units are easily rented since the majority of leases work in various industrial estates in the area and they can avoid the traffic in Pattaya city. Thirdly, facilities and amenities are spreading to many parts of the city, such as along Sukhumvit Road from South Pattaya to Na Jomtien.

Knight Frank?s research has shown that the selling price of non-seaview condominium projects which are located off-beach have an average price of THB43,741 (US$1396) per square metre since the cost of land was cheap. Meanwhile, the non-seaview condominiums which are located in close proximity to the beach sold at an average of THB48,486 (US$1547) per square metre, whilst city condominiums had the highest selling prices, with the average cost being THB61,630 (US$1968) per square metre.

Top Five Personal Fitness Apps | Mobile Phone Blog

Following the overwhelming popularity of the?Olympics, it seems that the nation has gone sports mad. Athletics clubs are seeing a huge growth in membership applications and people are generally moving from a sedentary lifestyle to embracing personal fitness on a whole new level, whether it be as fairweather joggers or hardcore gym obsessives.

Smartphone owners who want all the benefits of a personal trainer packed into their handset have a myriad of options available when it comes to apps that can aid health and fitness. Here, we take a look at five of the best options available across different?operating systems to get you into gold medal winning shape.

5. GAIN Fitness

iOS app?GAIN Fitness touts itself as the modern equivalent to a personal trainer and being full of custom workout regimes, it does an incredibly good job. Whether the user is training for a marathon or looking for a full body tune-up,?GAIN Fitness will have it covered thanks to a detailed list of options that allow a totally bespoke fitness timetable to be built.

The interface makes the app very easy to get around and innovative touches such as video examples of individual workout moves makes for an impressively intuitive user experience. For those seeking even more training options, several expansion packs are also available for the app.

4.? WalkJogRun

Those looking for a less intense workout atmosphere than that offered by the likes of?GAIN Fitness could do much worse than consider the serene?WalkJogRun. Available for iOS and with an Android version on its way soon, the app caters for anyone that wants to get fit at their own pace (but is happy to pound the pavement to do it).

Using GPS data to chart and log movements during training,?WalkJogRun creates an overall picture of a user?s fitness history and, as such, is able to provide detailed data for everything from calories burned to elevation data of a given route. Users can also upload their favourite routes, meaning the app has a huge database with which to inspire any up and coming Mo Farahs.

3. RunKeeper

A phenomenally popular app for runners, hikers, cyclists and anyone else looking to get fit by getting on the move, RunKeeper provides a myriad of options for devotees of physical exertion. The software is available for both Android and iOS and offers a combination of GPS-based stats with a strong community element.

The app is incredibly easy to use from the off and lets users start tracking routes almost instantly. At the end of a session a detailed route map is provided along with a vast array of information including calories burned, average pace and distance ran. Activities can also be shared across social networks, making showing off fitness stats to friends a one touch process.

2. MyFitnessPal

Available for iOS, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry OS,?MyFitnessPal offers a holistic approach to health and fitness. The app provides the complete health package with a food diary, daily exercise record and detailed progress chart all on hand to help aid and monitor your progress.

Although?MyFitnessPal is as much about diet as it is about exercise, this combination approach allows for a balanced perspective on personal health and as such is perfect for anyone who is simply looking to compliment a diet with some basic aerobic exercise.

1. Endomondo

As pretty much the ultimate exercise companion,?Endomondo is a vital resource for anyone who is even slightly obsessed with health and fitness. The app is open across all platforms, even Symbian, and is able to track activities such as running, cycling, aerobics and hiking.

Like?RunKeeper,?Endomondo keeps track of activities via GPS signal but offers a much more detailed level of exercise analysis including innovative features such as personalised hydration recommendations and distance goals with audio feedback.

Will power is still undoubtedly the most important aspect of getting out and doing some exercise, however Endomondo provides a level of motivational material unparalleled by other fitness apps and makes the fight for health that little bit easier.

Facebook updates iPhone app to speed it up

MENLO PARK, Calif. (AP) ? What's the worst insult you can throw at a fast-moving company like Facebook? Call its iPhone app slow and poky.

On Thursday, Facebook Inc. addressed users who had gripes with its app for iPhones and iPads with the launch of a faster version. Rather than add a slew of new features, the company said it rebuilt the application from scratch to make it speedier and less clunky.

In a recent demonstration at the company's Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters, the new iPhone app opened about twice as fast as the older version. Photos and comments also load faster. Users can now "like" comments on photos, which wasn't possible with the previous mobile app.

Mick Johnson, mobile product manager at Facebook, said programmers removed some lesser-used features, such as a way to view the app horizontally, to help speed it up.

The mobile arena presents Facebook with its biggest challenge ?and its biggest opportunity. That's where its user base is growing the most. At the end of June, Facebook had 543 million users who accessed it with a phone or tablet computer, up 67 percent from 325 million a year earlier. Its overall user base grew 29 percent over the same time period, to 955 million.

But while Facebook ads are well-established on its website, the company only recently started experimenting with mobile advertisements. That's been a concern for investors, who've sent Facebook's stock down by nearly half since the company's initial public offering three months ago.

The iPad version of the new app now features Timeline, the latest version of the profile page that Facebook is rolling out to all of its users.

The app is available for free from Apple's App Store.

Still absent from Facebook's app is any integration of Instagram. That's because Facebook hasn't closed the acquisition of the photo-sharing app. Though it got a step closer Wednesday, when the Federal Trade Commission said it has closed its investigation into Facebook's planned acquisition.

The FTC said it is not taking action on the deal, which can now go forward as planned. Facebook has agreed to buy Instagram in a cash and stock deal worth about $748 million, based on Facebook's stock price on Thursday. The price tag had been about $1 billion when the companies initiated the deal before Facebook's IPO, in April.

Amazon to hold press event on Sept. 6 (Hello, new Kindle?)

6 hrs.

Amazon is holding a press event on Sept. 6, in Santa Monica, Calif., and that probably means exactly what you think it means: That a new Kindle ??or two, or three ??is on the way.

Analysts have suggested that several?new Kindle models, including a 7-inch upgrade that people have dubbed "Kindle Fire 2," could be on the way.

Richard Shim,?an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch,?says?that his sources claim that there would be three flavors of?Kindle 2?hitting production lines this fall,?as CNET's Brooke Crothers points out???one with no camera, one with a camera, and one with a camera and 4G cellular?connectivity.

There could also be an 8.9-inch version of the tablet at the very end of the year, which would compete more?directly with the current?iPad, he added.

This speculation is based on?orders placed for components, so things could certainly change. But given the timing, we suspect that we'll be seeing at least one shiny new Kindle next month.

In addition to those LCD-screen touch?tablets, Amazon has been rumored to be working on a glowing-screen version of its popular e-ink Kindle. It was expected sooner, as Barnes & Noble released its own light-up Nook in July.

All that, and maybe Amazon will even reveal?its own?branded smartphone, too. (But ...?probably not.)

But no matter what we think will happen, we'll be in Santa Monica on Sept. 6 for Amazon's announcement.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Houston Dynamo defeat FAS 3-1

SANTA ANA, El Salvador (AP) -Houston Dynamo won its opening match in Group Three of the CONCACAF Champions League by defeating Salvador's FAS 3-1 on Wednesday.

Brian Ching gave Houston Dynamo the lead in the 12th minute, banging in a bouncing header from a cross from Colin Clark. Dynamo scored again seven minutes later through Cam Weaver. Kofi Sarkodie, who set up the second goal, scored the third with a header in the 60th.

Jonathan Aguila scored for FAS in the 64th.

The early goals took FAS out of the match, and while the hosts had slightly more possession, they still lost their second straight match to begin the Group Three.

(AP) ? A huge wildfire in California is just the latest destructive blaze to stretch resources across the West during a fire season that has been one of the worst in years.

The fires have left some states with thin budgets to scramble to get people, planes, bulldozers and other tools on fire lines to beat back the flames.

And that's with about a third of the annual wildfire season remaining.

According to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, the nation as of Wednesday had seen 42,927 wildfires this year, which burned just over 7 million acres.

While the number of fires is down from the 10-year average of 54,209 as of Aug. 22, the acreage was well above the average of 5.4 million acres, said Don Smurthwaite, a NIFC spokesman.

"The fires are bigger," Smurthwaite said.

In Colorado Springs, Colo., this summer, about 350 homes were burned in the most destructive wildfire in state history. Another fire in northern Colorado just before it scorched 257 homes.

The costs have mounted, not just in the damage to houses and other buildings.

In Utah, for example, officials have spent $50 million as of mid-August to fight more than 1,000 wildfires, far surpassing the $3 million a year the Legislature budgeted for fighting wildfires.

The state's share is estimated at $16 million, said Roger Lewis of the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands. He said lawmakers will need to figure out how to come up with $13 million.

That's the largest-ever supplemental appropriation request needed for firefighting in the state, agency spokesman Jason Curry said. He said, "It's obviously been a big year."

Washington state fire officials project that they will spend about $19.8 million on emergency fire suppression activities in the current fiscal year that ends next June.

That is expected to far surpass the $11.2 million the agency was allotted for such work, meaning the Department of Natural Resources will have to ask the Legislature for supplemental funds.

Not all Western states are seeing their budgets busted because of fires.

In Oregon, the state estimated it had spent $3.4 million through last Saturday to fight wildfires, with more than two months of the season left. Last year, it spent $6.6 million.

In Montana, forest managers told Gov. Brian Schweitzer that long-term forecasts call for fire conditions through the end of September, which is longer than normal.

The Northern Rockies Coordination Center put the total cost of fighting large wildfires in Montana, including costs to federal and state agencies, at $64 million so far this season. The state's share is about $25 million to fight fires that have burned about 1,100 square miles.

Schweitzer said the state has already burned through cash reserves set aside for such natural disasters, but that plenty of money is available from surplus general funds.

While parts of the Southwest, particularly Southern California, still have three months of fire season left, Smurthwaite said, shorter days, declining temperatures and higher humidity will help curtail fires.

"That's almost like putting a little wet blanket over a fire," he said.

In California, state fire spokesman Daniel Berlant said Wednesday that while crews were getting a handle on many of the fires in the northern part of the state, more lightning strikes in Southern California could trigger a new round of blazes.

"There's no reprieve just yet," Berlant said.

Firefighters in northern California on Wednesday made progress in containing a huge wildfire that has burned dozens of homes and scorched about 38 square miles. It was 50 percent contained Wednesday morning.

The threat to homes dropped from 3,500 earlier this week to roughly 200 residences, officials said.

Fire crews assessing the rural area determined Tuesday that 50 buildings had been destroyed since it was sparked by lightning Saturday. It was unclear when the structures burned and how many were homes.

More than 2,100 firefighters were battling the fire near several remote towns about 170 miles north of Sacramento.

Angie Nelson, 38, of Shingletown and her family were swimming at Whiskeytown Lake on Saturday when they got a phone call saying the fire was advancing on their house.

They drove home and her husband and teenage son climbed on the roof and cleaned the gutters of pine needles and leaves, watered the yard and started putting clothes, family pictures and other mementoes together.

Since then, the couple and their four children have been sleeping on the floor of Nelson's mother's house.

"It's stressful. I can't wait to go home. It's awkward staying at somebody's house, even if it is your mother," she said. "They're really going to appreciate sleeping in their own beds."

Nelson said she still had family pictures loaded in special evacuation buckets from the last time they had to leave their house four years ago.

Elsewhere in California, a large wildfire in Plumas National Forest continued to expand, helped by gusty winds.

The blaze, about 120 miles north of Sacramento, has consumed nearly 98 square miles since it started at the end of July and threatens about 900 homes. It was 37 percent contained Wednesday.

In Washington state, fire crews still hoped to fully contain a week-old wildfire that has destroyed 51 homes and 26 outbuildings and damaged at least six other homes, authorities said.

The fire, about 75 miles east of Seattle, has caused an estimated $8.3 million in property damage.

In south-central Idaho, authorities have spent more than $23 million fighting a fire near the towns of Pine and Featherville and another in a forest near the resort town of Stanley.

Those wildfires have each consumed about 150 square miles, and will not be extinguished for some time, Smurthwaite said.

"We expect to be managing them for weeks to come," he said.

Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: Paralysis Outbreak In ...

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an update last
week to its investigation of an outbreak of a paralysing condition that
is
affecting certain meat processing plant workers who use compressed air
to remove the brains from the heads of pig carcases.

The illness is called Progressive Inflammatory Neuropathy (PIN) and its symptoms range from acute paralysis to gradual increase of weakness on both sides of the body, which in some cases happens over 8 days and in others over 213 days. The symptoms vary in severity from slight weakness and numbness to paralysis that affects mobility, mostly in the lower extremities.

The current thinking, which is yet to be proved, is that the meat workers are being exposed to splatter and aerosol droplets of pig brain tissue created by the compressed air blast, which liquefies the tissue before expelling it from the pig skull. Once inhaled, small particles of pig brain tissue are then is attacked by the worker's immune system which uses antibodies that also attack the body's own almost identical human nerve tissue.

Following the PIN outbreak in a Minnesota meat processing plant, the CDC launched a nationwide survey of large slaughterhouses and found two more meat plants that had used the compressed air system recently. One of the plants was also reporting cases of a neurologic illness among its meat processing workers.

The outbreak came to the attention of the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) in October last year, when it started getting reports of an unexplained neurologic illness among meat processing workers in a swine slaughterhouse in Southeast Minnesota, and which the CDC calls "plant A".

The MDH conducted a full and detailed investigation of the plant, which employs some 1,200 workers and processes 18,000 pigs a day. They interviewed workers and looked at health records, and found a total of 12 employees who have either been confirmed as having PIN (8 so far), probably have it (2), or possibly have it (2).

The 12 workers, six of whom are female, started having symptoms between November 2006 and November 2007 and reported being healthy beforehand. They ranged in age from 21 to 51 years.

According to the MDH, 11 of the 12 workers affected showed evidence of axonal or demyelinating peripheral neuropathy (damage to nerve fibres and surrounding protective tissue). Spinal fluid taken from 7 of the workers showed they had high protein levels with little or no rise in pleocytosis or white blood cell count. A raised white blood cell count is usually evidence of inflammation.

However, five patients showed evidence of inflammation when examined by spinal MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), four of them in peripheral nerves or roots and one in the anteorior spinal cord.

All 12 affected workers said they either worked at or had contact with the area of the plant where pig heads were processed (called the "head table"). The head table was in an area of the plant known as the "warm room".

The MDH conducted a case-controlled study that included 10 of the 12 workers (the 8 confirmed and the 2 probable cases of PIN), and two control groups: a random selection of 48 healthy workers from the warm room, and all 65 healthy workers from the head table. After examining throat swabs and blood samples from the consenting participants, the MDH to date has not found any infectious agent that could explain the PIN symptoms.

Futher results from the case-control study showed that 7 of the 10 workers with PIN (70 per cent of the case patients) were seven times more likely to have worked at the head table than the controls from the warm room (25 per cent, or 12 of 48). Case patients were also more likely to have handled brains and muscle from pigs' heads than members of either control group.

Travel outside the US or inside the US, exposure to chemicals, including fertilizers and insecticides, or having had vaccinations, were also not found to be causes of the PIN illness.

The health authorities then investigated the processing methods and safety equipment in the warm room and the head table in particular, and concluded, for now, that the compressed air method used to liquefy and remove the brain tissue from the pigs' heads could be causing the PIN through creating aerosol droplets of brain tissue that is then inhaled by the workers.

The plant operator has suspended use of the compressed air equipment voluntarily and stepped up use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including face shields and long sleeves for the head table workers and any other workers who want to use additional PPE, said the CDC report.

Following the Minnesota plant A outbreak report, the CDC surveyed all 25 federally inspected swine slaughterhouses in the US with more than 500 employees. They found three plants, including Minnesota plant A, using the compressed air method to remove pigs' brains. The other two are in Nebraska and Indiana. Of those, only the Indiana plant has reported cases of suspected PIN, which are currently being further assessed. In the meantime, all three plants have stopped using the compressed air method to remove brain tissue, said the CDC.

The CDC said that:

"Whether compressed-air devices are being used for pig-brain extraction in other slaughterhouses or processing facilities, in the United States or internationally, is unknown."

"Clinicians should provide CDC with information regarding swine slaughterhouse workers who might have illnesses similar to PIN, including patients with peripheral neuropathy, myelopathy, or features of both."

If doctors se any patients who work in slaughterhouses with these symptoms, they should report them to their state health department and also let the CDC know on 770-488-7100.

A puzzling feature of this outbreak was raised by the plant owner at one of the affected plants, who started as a floor walker in 1970. He told the Washington Post that they had been "harvesting pig brains since 1998, using the same method and the same 70-pound pressure air hose." So why did the outbreak not take place ten years ago, when they started using the method? The plant owner said that was the "million-dollar question".

(AP) ? In a few weeks, about 2,800 cars, trucks and buses will start talking to each other on the streets of Ann Arbor, Mich., in a giant experiment that government officials are hoping will lead to safer roads.

Wireless devices will allow the vehicles to send signals to each other, warning their drivers of potential dangers such as stopped traffic or cars that might be blowing through a red light. They can even get traffic lights to turn green if no cars are coming the other way.

The U.S. Department of Transportation and the University of Michigan are hoping the year-long, $25 million project generates data that show the devices can cut down on traffic crashes. Officials say eventually this could lead to the devices going in every car. About 500 vehicles with the devices are now on the roads. That will rise to 2,800 in about six weeks, officials said Tuesday.

"This is a big day for safety," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said at an event at the university formally kicking off the experiment. "We'll use this information to decide if vehicle technology can be applied to daily lives."

More than 32,000 people died last year in U.S. traffic crashes, down 1.7 percent from 2010. The number of crashes has fallen in recent years as automakers added safety devices such as air bags, antilock brakes and stability control, which helps drivers keep cars under control in emergency situations.

But LaHood said Tuesday that 80 percent of crashes in which the drivers aren't impaired by drugs or alcohol could be prevented ? or the severity reduced ? if cars could talk to each other.

When the technology will make its way into cars and trucks everywhere is unclear. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has the authority to order the devices placed in all new cars, but LaHood said they'll have to study the data before making any decision. The data will be available in about a year.

In a demonstration at the Transportation Research Institute, a Volkswagen GTI equipped with a device got a signal that a car up ahead of it had braked. The warning allowed the GTI driver to slow down before seeing the brake lights on the car in front of him. The device also warned the GTI driver at a stop sign that another car was about to speed through the intersection.

Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai/Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen/Audi all are supplying vehicles and taking part in the test.

Peter Sweatman, director of the institute, said testers will look for data showing that the warnings prevented crashes. Previous tests, on a smaller scale, showed the devices can stop crashes, he said.

Technology is available so that connected cars could be on the road nationwide in under 10 years, Sweatman said.

"I think this is going to kick everything off," he said. "This is going to move everything forward."

Automakers have been adding safety devices such blind-spot warning detectors that warn a driver if there's a car in an adjoining lane, and radar-activated cruise control that can slow cars down if they're approaching an object too fast. The experiment should help tie them together, officials said.

In February, Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford called for just that in a speech to a mobile electronic device conference in Barcelona, Spain. He said the mobile device industry should join with automakers and governments to develop connected car technology to solve looming congestion and safety problems around the world.
