New Amy Winehouse album to be released in December (AP)

LONDON ? A new album of recordings by the late soul singer Amy Winehouse will be released in December, Island Records said Monday.

It said "Lioness: Hidden Treasures" will contain 12 songs ? previously unreleased tracks, alternative versions of existing hits and brand new songs ? recorded by the beehive-wearing singer who died at her London home on July 23.

The label said Winehouse's longtime musical partners Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi had spent time since her death listening to recordings of the singer, who many said never sang or played a song the same way twice.

Island Records said the duo quickly realized that they had "a collection of songs that deserved to be heard, a collection of songs that were a fitting testament to Amy the artist and, as importantly, Amy their friend."

The album ? Winehouse's third after "Frank" and "Back to Black" ? will be released on Dec. 5. Ronson and Remi compiled the tracks in collaboration with Winehouse's family, management and the label.

Winehouse's final studio recording ? a cover of "Body & Soul" sung with Tony Bennett ? will be included in the album.

The singer's father, Mitch Winehouse, said he had never before heard another one of the tracks, "Halftime," and described the song as "just incredibly beautiful."

"If the family had felt that this album wasn't up to the standard of 'Frank' and 'Back To Black' we would never have agreed to release it and we believe it will stand as a fitting tribute to Amy's musical legacy," he said in the Island Records statement.

A donation of 1 pound ($1.60) from the sale of each album in the U.K. will go to a foundation to assist disadvantaged children and young adults set up in the artist's name following her death.

Last week a British coroner ruled the Grammy-winning singer died from accidental alcohol poisoning when she resumed drinking after weeks of abstinence.

The 27-year-old Winehouse had fought a very public battle with drug and alcohol abuse for years, and there had been much speculation that she died from a drug overdose.

Witness: Jackson gave himself fatal injection

An anesthesia expert testifying for the doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death told jurors Friday he believes the pop superstar gave himself a fatal injection of an anesthetic.

Dr. Paul White said the self-injection theory is the only one supported by the physician's statement to police and by evidence found at Jackson's rented mansion.

White said he saw no evidence supporting the prosecution theory that Jackson's doctor was infusing the singer with propofol using an IV.

The researcher said the evidence recovered in Jackson's bedroom was more consistent with the singer receiving the powerful anesthetic through an injection.

Video: Witness suggests Jackson was addicted (on this page)

A prosecution expert had told jurors he believed Jackson's doctor used an IV drip of propofol and said that was the only way to explain the high levels of the drug found in the singer's body.

White noted there were no IV bags or lines found in Jackson's bedroom that showed propofol residue throughout the lines. He also said the levels of propofol found in Jackson's urine did not support the IV theory.

Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

White's testimony was expected to end Murray's defense case after 16 witnesses. It likely will be vigorously challenged by prosecutors, who spent four weeks laying out their case that Murray is a greedy, inept and reckless doctor who was giving Jackson propofol as a sleep aid in the singer's bedroom.

Propofol is not intended as a sleep aid and, medical groups say, should be administered only in a hospital or surgical setting with advanced monitoring equipment.

Cross-examination of White has been delayed until Monday to give prosecutors more time to review a new analysis prepared by the defense based on recently conducted tests of samples taken during Jackson's autopsy.

Video: Judge concerned about toll of trial on jury (on this page)

The judge hearing the case, which ends its fifth week Friday, reluctantly agreed to delay the cross examination and said he is concerned about losing jurors. Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor, however, noted the panel has remained rapt throughout the trial.

"Every single member of that jury and all the alternates are paying extraordinary attention to every witness," Pastor said.

White told jurors he saw no evidence that Murray left Jackson on an IV drip of propofol when he left the room and returned to find the singer unresponsive June 25, 2009.

White said the singer would have had to lie completely still to keep from disturbing the bottle under that scenario, and he has never heard of anyone using an IV saline bottle to suspend a bottle of propofol for a drip.

Slideshow: Michael Jackson's face over the years (on this page)

White noted all bottles of the drug come with a tab on the side, which can be used to hang them from an IV stand.

Defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan concluded his direct examination of White Friday morning, and the judge recessed the case until Monday.

White performed clinical studies of propofol for years before it was approved for usage by the Food and Drug Administration in 1989.

White initially was reluctant to become involved in the Jackson case. But he said after reading more than a dozen expert reports, he couldn't figure out how others came to the conclusion that Murray would have had to leave Jackson on a propofol IV drip for the singer to die with the anesthetic still coursing through his body.

IDC: Samsung, ZTE see jump in mobile shipments, Apple slides to fifth place

Q3 earnings reports have been pouring in over the past few days, which means it's time to check in with IDC on the state of the mobile market. The research firm's latest report, released today, is something of a mixed bag. On the one hand, Q3 global shipments increased by 12.8 percent year-over-year -- higher than the 9.3 percent that IDC had predicted for the quarter and the 9.8 percent growth observed last quarter. At the same time, however, the market grew at the second slowest pace in two years and shipments to Western Europe and the US actually declined over the year, something the company attributes to more restrained consumer spending and more widespread economic uncertainty.

On the company level, both Samsung and ZTE came away as the biggest winners this quarter; Sammy's shipments increased by 23 percent over the year, good for second place, while ZTE's shot up by a whopping 57.9 percent, launching the company into fourth place. Apple, meanwhile, saw 26.2 percent growth in its shipments and a slight bump in market share, but still couldn't avoid getting leapfrogged by ZTE and dropping down to fifth place. And then there's LG, which had by far the worst quarter, relative to Q3 2010. The manufacturer saw shipments decline by nearly 26 percent over the year, while its market share slipped to 5.4 percent. All these horses, however, are still chasing Nokia, which saw a small drop in shipments, but managed to hang on to the top spot, with over 106 million shipments during the quarter -- good for 27 percent of the market. For more numbers and insight, check out the full PR after the break.

Icon Derelict '52 Chevy Business Coupe is unassuming masterpiece

ICON Derelict 1952 Chevrolet Business Coupe

Ladies and gentleman, this is what SEMA should be about. Behold the latest Icon Derelict; a 1952 Chevrolet Deluxe Business Coupe hiding a full arsenal of modern engineering beneath over half a century of patina.

The vehicle uses a complete powder-coated Art Morrison chassis with a front independent suspension and a four-link rear. An all-aluminum, fuel-injected 6.2-liter General Motors LS3 V8 sits between the frame rails and cranks out 430 horsepower. The engine is mated to a 4L65E automatic transmission and a full set of six-piston brakes with anti-lock control ensures that the whole party can come to a stop in a timely fashion. Despite looking like junkyard relics, the wheels are actually custom CNC-machined pieces shod in ZR-rated BF Goodrich rubber.

If the Coupe's mechanicals and exterior aren't enough to flip your switches, take a peek indoors. Both seats have been recovered in a combination of wild-caught alligator and buffalo hides(!) that have been dyed to the same Hermes hue as John F. Kennedy's briefcase. The carpet is Rolls-Royce Wilton wool bound in buffalo as well, and an Aston Martin vintage mohair headliner finishes out the indoors. An array of tech is also tastefully hidden away as well, including Focal and Parrot audio components with Bluetooth capability.

This sort of execution is so far above and beyond the typical restomod and tuner fodder we typically see from the SEMA crowd that it serves as a breath of fresh air. If you like what you see, Icon says that the company can do the same for nearly any vehicle from the '30s to the '70s.

Gentlemen, start your imaginations. The Icon Derelict 1952 Chevrolet Business Coupe will be on display at this year's SEMA show.

Teenage Frances Bean Cobain is engaged

Isaiah Silva is a brave man. Not because he is, by several accounts, about to marry rock royalty and plunge into marriage with his girlfriend of a year, Frances Bean Cobain.

No. It's because he might soon have Courtney Love as a mother-in-law. And you fellas out there thought you had it rough.

MORE: Kaley Cuoco is engaged!

While speculation about the 19-year-old rock scion's engagement has been swirling all week, this morning an unnamed inside source finally confirmed to People that the betrothal speculation between Cobain and Silva, the frontman for the L.A.-based band The Rambles (bet their profile is going to rise), was in fact true.

    1. Is Daria returning to 'Beavis and Butt-head'?

Fans of the show from back when it originally aired were excited for the return of the duo, but there's possibly some more good news.

Story: Why Nirvana's 'Nevermind' spoke to a generation

Credit for first sussing out the engagement goes to the sleuthers at O.C. Weekly, who first fueled the gossip fires this week, when they noticed that both Silva and Kurt Cobain's only offspring had quietly changed their relationship statuses on Facebook to "engaged" a few weeks ago. Both keep pages under fake names (Frances Rachel Leigh Cook for the lady, Isaiah David Berkowitz-Cusack for the gentleman) and while the statuses have since reverted back, the news apparently still holds true.

MORE: What does Courtney Love have to do with a $100,000 jewel heist?

"Getting to spend the rest of my life loving my best friend makes me the luckiest woman in the world," Cobain wrote in a comment on her page dated Sept. 13, right after Silva called himself "a lucky man."

Story: 12 unlikely covers of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'

Things got even more obvious this month, when the rocker ? whom, it has indeed been pointed out, bears something of a striking resemblance to Kurt ? commented underneath a friend's photo, "Haha I do what I can. And by do what I can I mean not shower and steal clothes from my fiance and the good will."

There's no word on whether a wedding date has been set, but it certainly hasn't been announced. And congrats, you two. We can't wait to hear what the mother of the bride has to say about this.

AngloGold Ashanti leader Mark Cutifani stated there was a massive upside towards the existing gold value of about $US1600 an ounce. He stated the current run-up within the gold price tag was not a bubble plus the latest price tag barely covered production charges for a lot of miners.

"For me, the threat continues to be for the upside," Mr Cutifani informed the Commonwealth Company Forum in Perth yesterday ahead with the CHOGM forum later this week.

Gold Prices

"Within the subsequent two many years, I feel it could conveniently touch $US2200 an ounce around the basis that input inflation continues to be substantial and ... the globe will see a great deal of uncertainty more than the subsequent couple of many years," he stated. "In these scenarios, gold tends to accomplish pretty effectively."

Mr Cutifani stated gold mining corporations had been struggling with skyrocketing production expenditures, which have been set to carry on increasing.

"It fees nearly $US1200 an ounce now to create an ounce of gold," he stated. "At about $US1600 an ounce, the bulk in the sector continues to be struggling to recover its weighted common price of capital, so I do not see the price tag at present as a bubble."

WWE Raw SuperShow results: Kevin Nash brings the hammer down

AUSTIN, TEXAS ? Twenty four hours after a ring was smashed, a challenger was assaulted and an executive was powerbombed, Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis attempted to bring order back to WWE Raw SuperShow. Easier said than done.

John Cena def. The Miz & R-Truth by Disqualification; Cena chose his partner for Survivor Series (WATCH | PHOTOS)
After his partner, Zack Ryder, was taken out by The ?Awesome Truth,? John Cena was forced to face the dangerous pair alone ? a challenge he was more than ready to embrace. Singlehandedly battering the two men who cost him the WWE Title at Vengeance, the powerful Superstar was close to winning this bout on his own before The Awesome One and his deranged partner double teamed Cena, resulting in a disqualification.

Looking to bring order back to his show, Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis ordered the team to exit the ring. The executive then made a huge announcement ? John Cena will take on The Miz & R-Truth at Survivor Series with a partner of his choosing. Who did the former WWE Champion pick? His WrestleMania XXVIII opponent, The Rock. (WATCH) But will The Great One accept this huge offer?

1236560729001|02:34Michael Cole called out Jim Ross (WATCH)
Michael Cole doesn?t know when to quit. Looking to further humiliate the legendary Jim Ross, the sniveling announcer showed the WWE Universe a collection of embarrassing pics of Good Ol' J.R., which were obviously Photoshopped. Cole then dared J.R. to face him in a ?Michael Cole Challenge? next Monday in Atlanta. Although he wouldn?t reveal what a ?Michael Cole Challenge? was, he did say if Ross wins he can have his seat at the announce table, because if Cole loses he will quit.

Wade Barrett def. John Morrison (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Wade Barrett made one thing perfectly clear after he stomped John Morrison ? his resurrection had begun. Looking to return to the days when he locked up with the likes of John Cena and Randy Orton, the British thug has refocused his career. Tonight?s destruction of The Prince of Parkour assured that he?s headed in the right direction.

Alicia Fox def. Natalya (WATCH | PHOTOS)
The night after Divas Champion Beth Phoenix triumphed over Eve at Vengeance, (PHOTOS) her ?Sister of Salvation? Natalya was less successful against the agile Alicia Fox. Rolling up The Hart Dungeon Diva out of nowhere, Alicia scored the pin and then exited the ring before a very angry Glamazon could do any damage.

CM Punk confronted WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Interrupting another boastful speech from WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio, CM Punk questioned The Mexican Aristocrat?s claims that no one could beat him. Pointing out that he pinned him as recently as a month ago, The Voice of the Voiceless challenged the champion to put his title on the line against him. Unsurprisingly, Del Rio scoffed, saying the Chicago native wasn't a worthy challenger.

1236571722001|11:50The tense moment brought out Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis who awarded Punk his WWE Title Match for Survivor Series, but there was a catch. Explaining that The Straight Edge Superstar had to revere him before he gave him a championship opportunity, the executive commanded Punk to tell the entire WWE Universe that he respected him. The incendiary Superstar sarcastically obliged, but it wasn?t good enough for Mr. Laurinaitis who told the tattooed rebel he?d take a week to think about the title bout. The Straight Edge Superstar then gave both the GM and Del Rio something to think about by nailing Ricardo Rodriguez with the GTS. (WATCH: PUNK'S THOUGHTS ON THE INTERIM GM)

United States Champion Dolph Ziggler def. Santino Marella (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Full of adrenaline and ego after successfully defending his United States Championship against Zack Ryder the night before, (PHOTOS) the arrogant Dolph Ziggler Zig Zagged his way to victory over Santino Marella. The bleached blond?s celebration was short lived, however, as the massive Mason Ryan immediately stormed the ring. Bailing before the powerhouse could get his hands on him, Ziggler and his manager Vickie Guerrero raced to the locker room, but their associate Jack Swagger wasn?t as lucky. ?The All-American American? will be seeking a good chiropractor after the boot Ryan gave him.?

The Muppets are coming (WATCH)
Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and the rest of the legendary Muppets are headed to WWE. On what is assured to be an unpredictable Halloween edition of WWE Raw SuperShow, the furry stars of their own upcoming film will get in the ring. Let?s just hope Fozzy Bear doesn?t crack a bad joke to Mark Henry.

Randy Orton & Sheamus def. Christian & Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes (WATCH | PHOTOS)
In a follow-up to the events of Vengeance, (FULL RESULTS) The Viper and The Celtic Warrior teamed up to claim a tag victory over the rivals they defeated in singles action on pay-per-view ? the cunning Christian and the demented Cody Rhodes. It was a surprising bit of teamwork from two brawlers who usually go it alone, but nothing brings a pair of Superstars together quite like shared animosity.

1236435349001|01:56Kevin Nash attacked Triple H with a sledgehammer (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Triple H came to Austin, Texas to fight. Incensed after being brutally attacked by Kevin Nash at Vengeance, (PHOTOS) The Game demanded that Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis rehire Nash so The Cerebral Assassin could beat him up without going to prison. Using language that was barely suitable for television, the WWE COO?s fury shocked many, but the real surprise came when Kevin Nash once again assaulted his former friend ? this time with a sledgehammer, The Game's signature weapon.

The beating was so vicious, Triple H had to be carted out of the arena by EMTs, but it did not end there. Breaking into the Superstar?s ambulance, Nash pulled out the stretchered Game, propped him up against a wall and drove the sledgehammer right into The Cerebral Assassin?s skull. (WATCH) According to reports, The King of Kings suffered a concussion and possibly a broken neck.

Obama: Libyans can celebrate 'new era of promise' (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama hailed the declaration of freedom in Libya on Sunday, saying "a new era of promise" is under way in the African nation. He also urged its new leaders to turn their attention to the political transition ahead.

The leader of Libya's transitional government, Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, declared the country liberated Sunday, three days after the capture and death of dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

In a statement issued by the White House, Obama congratulated the Libyan people and said, "After four decades of brutal dictatorship and eight months of deadly conflict, the Libyan people can now celebrate their freedom and the beginning of a new era of promise."

Obama said the U.S. looks forward to working with officials as they prepare for free and fair elections.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she supported calls for an investigation into Gadhafi's death as part of Libya's transition from dictatorship to democracy.

Gadhafi was captured wounded but alive in his hometown of Sirte. Bloody images of Gadhafi being taunted and beaten by his captors have raised questions about whether he was killed in crossfire, as suggested by government officials, or was executed.

Clinton told NBC's "Meet the Press" in an interview aired Sunday that she backs a proposal for the United Nations to investigate Gadhafi's death and for Libya's Transitional National Council to look into the circumstances.

Clinton said a democratic Libya should begin with the rule of law and accountability, as well as unity and reconciliation. She called investigating Gadhafi's death a part of that process.

Demise of Obama long-term care plan leaves gap (AP)

WASHINGTON ? It's the one major health expense for which nearly all Americans are uninsured. The dilemma of paying for long-term care is likely to worsen now that the Obama administration pulled the plug on a program seen as a first step.

The Community Living Assistance Services and Supports program, or CLASS, was included in the health overhaul law to provide basic long-term care insurance at an affordable cost. But financial problems dogged it from the outset.

Those concerns prompted the administration to announce that CLASS would not go forward. Yet it could take a decade or longer for lawmakers to tackle the issue again, and by then the retirement of the Baby Boomers will be in full swing.

Most families don't plan for long-term care. Often the need comes unexpectedly: an elder takes a bad fall, a teen is calamitously injured in a car crash or a middle-aged worker suffers a debilitating stroke.

Nursing home charges can run more than $200 a day and a home health aide averages $450 a week, usually part-time. Yet Medicare doesn't cover long-term care, and only about 3 percent of adults have a private policy.

"Long-term care is a critical issue, and people are in total denial about it," said Bill Novelli, former CEO of AARP. "I am very sorry the administration did what they finally did, although I understand it. It is going to take a long time to get this back ? and fixed."

The irony, experts say, is that paying for long-term care is the kind of problem insurance should be able to solve. It has to do with the mathematics of risk.

Most drivers will have some kind of accident during their years behind the wheel, but few will be involved in a catastrophic wreck. And some very careful drivers will not experience any accidents. The risks of long-term care are not all that different, says economist Harriet Komisar of the Georgetown University Public Policy Institute.

"A small percentage of people are going to need a year, two years, five years or more in a nursing home, but for those who do, it's huge," Komisar said. "Insurance makes sense when the odds are small but the financial risk is potentially high and unaffordable."

Komisar and her colleagues estimate that nearly 7 in 10 people will need some level of long-term care after turning 65. That's defined as help with personal tasks such as getting dressed, going to the toilet, eating, or taking a bath.

Many of those who need help will get it from a family member. Only 5 percent will need five years or more in a nursing home. And 3 in 10 will not need any long-term care assistance at all.

For those who do need extended nursing home care, Medicaid has become the default provider, since Medicare only covers short-term stays for rehab. But Medicaid is for low-income people, so the disabled literally have to impoverish themselves to qualify, a wrenching experience for families.

Liberals say the answer is government-sponsored insurance, like the CLASS plan the Obama administration included in the health overhaul law, only to find it wouldn't work financially.

The administration was unable to reconcile twin goals of CLASS: financial solvency and affordable coverage easily accessible to all working adults, regardless of health.

Conservatives have called for private coverage, perhaps with tax credits to make it more affordable.

Some experts say it will take a combination of both approaches.

"It almost has to be," said Robert Yee, a financial actuary hired by the Obama administration to try to make CLASS work.

Lower-income workers probably would never be able to afford private insurance, Yee explained. And a lavish public plan is out of the question.

"Anytime people talk about a social program, you are talking about a basic layer," he said.

Indeed, Yee had proposed to keep CLASS afloat by using some of the techniques of private insurers to attract the healthy and discourage the frail. The administration rejected that hybrid approach as incompatible with the law's intent to cover all regardless of health.

"Despite our best analytical efforts, I do not see a viable path forward for CLASS implementation at this time," Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told congressional leaders.

Although CLASS would have come too late to help his disabled mother, Jacob Bockser of Walnut Creek, Calif., says he is disappointed.

Bockser, 29, is a former emergency medical technician studying to become a respiratory therapist. His mother Elizabeth, 58, is struggling with an aggressive form of multiple sclerosis.

She had moved to lower-cost Washington state to save money, but as her condition worsens her son is trying to find a way to bring her back to California. She can still live in her own home, with help to keep safe.

"She did a lot of good saving. But because she did good, it disqualifies her from some kinds of public assistance," said the son. "When you are only 58 and looking at hopefully living another 20 or 25 years, it's scary to think the money just won't last."

Bockser says he doesn't expect the government to solve everything, but "even if there is the opportunity to try to piece together a couple of different programs that would be a start."

Eurozone closer to cutting Greece's huge debts (AP)

BRUSSELS ? Finance ministers from the 17 euro countries agreed Friday to pay Greece its next batch of bailout loans, avoiding a potentially disastrous default, and moved closer to reducing the country's massive debt burden.

But Greece's debts are only one piece of Europe's economic puzzle. The ministers meeting in Brussels were also struggling with two more complicated ? and arguably more important ? issues: boosting the firepower of the eurozone's euro440 billion ($607 billion) bailout fund to keep the crisis from spreading and forcing weak banks to increase their capital buffers as a defense against market turmoil.

A European Union official said ministers had made progress on strengthening the banks, and that a plan should be ready for a summit of EU leaders Sunday. He spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential negotiations.

However, more work remained to be done on Greece and the bailout fund, the European Financial Stability Facility. Decisions on those two fronts were not expected until a second summit on Wednesday.

Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos welcomed the news that Athens would get the next euro8 billion ($11 billion) installment, calling it a "positive step." A day earlier, Greek lawmakers had approved new, deeply contentious austerity measures to get the money.

The loans, which still need the approval of the International Monetary Fund, should be delivered during the first half of November. The money will keep Greece afloat for a little longer, but most economists agree that the country also needs a substantial cut to its debt load.

The findings of a report from Greece's international debt inspectors piled more pressure on European finance chiefs to find a solution for the country, whose troubles kicked off the crisis almost two years ago.

According to the report, Athens won't be able to raise money on financial markets until 2021 unless it is allowed to write off more of its debt load. If that doesn't happen, the country would need hundreds of billions of euros in new bailout loans.

A person familiar with the report said a tentative deal reached with banks in July to give Greece easier terms on its bonds would still leave it with a huge debt load of 152 percent of economic output in 2020. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the report is confidential.

Germany is pushing for a revision of the July deal to have Greece's private creditors take bigger losses of 50 percent to 60 percent and reduce its debt to some 120 percent of GDP by 2020.

The EU official said ministers had moved closer to Germany's position on steeper cuts to Greece's debt, but some financially weaker countries were still worried that could destabilize their markets and push their borrowing rates higher. "I wouldn't say there's a consensus but something close to that," he said.

The eurozone needs to find a way to ensure that larger countries like Spain and Italy don't get engulfed in the debt crisis, as they would be too expensive to bail out.

Increasing the firepower of the bailout fund, the European Financial Stability Facility, is meant to offer that protection, but Germany and France still disagree over how to do that.

Ministers failed to make much progress on that front Friday night and broke up the meeting shortly after starting discussions on the EFSF.

A German official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that a combination of two options had crystallized as the most likely solution to giving the fund more leverage.

The first would involve the bailout fund acting as an insurer for bond issues from wobbly countries like Italy. That would essentially compensate investors against a first round of potential losses and keep governments' borrowing costs in check.

In addition, the International Monetary Fund ? which has already provided about a third of the bailout cash for Greece, Ireland and Portugal ? would supply other stragglers with precautionary credit lines to make sure they have ready access to cheap money.

Last weekend, at a meeting in Paris, the finance chiefs from the Group of 20 leading economies opened the door for a larger role by the IMF, but only if the eurozone first does its part.

Acid Reflux Treatment for Babies Draws Criticism (LiveScience.com)

Use of medications to suppress stomach acid in infants has skyrocketed, but the trend is neither based in science nor beneficial to babies, a commentary suggests.

Advertising for acid reflux medications, misinterpretations of infants' normal responses and an over- medicalized culture are to blame, according to Dr. Eric Hassall, a pediatric gastroenterologist from Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation in San Francisco.

One large study of about 1 million infants revealed a 7-fold increase in prescriptions for proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) for infants between 1999 and 2004, Hassall said. PPIs work by blocking the production of acid in the stomach (Prilosec, Prevacid and Nexium fall into this category).

That study also showed that prescriptions for one of the PPIs, made in a child-friendly liquid, rose 16-fold over the study period, and that PPIs were prescribed to approximately 0.5 percent of babies before they reached 1 year of age, with about half of those prescriptions coming before 4 months of age.

Spitting up and crying have "long been observed in otherwise healthy, thriving infants," with as many as 40 percent to 70 percent of infants spitting up on a daily basis, Hassall wrote. This reflux is normal, not gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD).

But parents are bombarded with advertising, leading them to "blur the lines between normality and pathologies," Hassall wrote.

Hassall's commentary is published today (Oct. 20) in the Journal of Pediatrics.

Reasons for over-prescribing

The over-prescribing "owes a lot to advertising, specifically to use of the term 'acid reflux,'" Hassall wrote.

But spitting up is not due to an infant's inability to handle acid; hence, it is not acid reflux disease. Still, parents come into pediatricians' offices claiming that their child has acid reflux, and doctors willingly prescribe an acid-suppressing medicine, Hassall wrote.

Spitting up is due to large amount of food that an infant cannot hold; hence, it is normal and resolves on its own in at least 95 percent of infants, Hassall wrote. Yet crying and spitting up are increasingly "conflated into a diagnosis of GERD."

Excessive crying is all too easily interpreted as signifying stomach distress, but increased crying in the first three to five months is absolutely normal, he wrote. On rare occasions, an identifiable treatable cause, such as allergies to milk or diet, is the reason for excessive crying.

Ineffective treatment, potential harm

There is no science that backs using proton pump inhibitors for infants, but there is "GERD mania," according to Hassall. The largest clinical trial in infants found that a proton pump inhibitor was no better than placebo.

There is danger in reducing normal acid secretion. "Gastric acid is an early line of defense against infection and important for absorption of certain nutrients," Hassall wrote. A slew of health problems are more common in people who've taken acid-suppressing medications, including acute gastroenteritis, ?one type of pneumonia and food allergies. Infants might be at risk these illnesses just because they took a proton-pump inhibitor, he wrote.

PPIs could also cause nutritional deficiencies, which are especially worrisome when kids are growing and developing, Hassall wrote.

Another source of harm is misinformation. Hassall criticized a website that advises using doses "far in excess of the doses published in pediatric clinical studies." Parents do not realize that infants metabolize these medicines much more slowly than older kids do, so smaller doses are safer.

Diagnostic testing for GERD in infants is only warranted if symptoms are severe and do not go away, he wrote.

Remedies

To reduce the overuse of acid-suppressing medications, one place to start would be in stopping the routine use of words, such as GERD and acid reflux, in referring to infants. "These symptoms and signs are just "life," not a disease, and as such do not warrant drug therapy," Hassall wrote.

"I am just as guilty as the mothers, who come in distraught by crying and spitting up," Dr. Beth Tarini, a pediatrician at the University of Michigan, told MyHealthNewsDaily. "This is something that has been medicalized, and we need to tell parents that this is just an unfortunate bump in the road."

Reassurance is key, Tarini said, but she doubts pediatricians will be able to stem demand for the medications. With kids' cough medicines, and the over-treating of ear infections, she said it took the FDA to stop it.

"We may need the FDA to put the final nail on this one, too," she said.

Pass it on: Babies may be treated with acid reflux drugs they don't need, which might raise their risk for nutritional deficiencies or allergies.

Southwest posts 3Q loss on fuel hedges

(AP) ? Southwest Airlines reported a third-quarter loss of $140 million because its fuel-hedging bets turned sour when the price of oil dropped over the summer.

Fuel-hedging is like insurance against a spike in oil prices, and airlines use the technique to smooth out volatile prices.

But Southwest's hedges lost value when crude prices fell by one-fifth during the quarter. They have since regained some of those losses.

Excluding the hedging losses and other one-time expenses, Southwest said Thursday it would have earned $122 million, or 15 cents per share ? a penny better than analysts expected.

With the addition of AirTran Airways, which Southwest bought in May, revenue rose 35 percent to $4.31 billion, beating the $4.17 billion forecast by analysts surveyed by FactSet. Southwest boosted the average fare 7.4 percent, to $142.31, but still packed more people into its planes. The average flight was 82 percent full.

Southwest spent $1.59 billion on fuel in three months, a 71 percent jump from a year ago ? the addition of AirTran exaggerated the impact.

Southwest said fourth-quarter costs for each mile it flies will rise slightly in the fourth quarter. That forecast doesn't include fuel spending.

The airline said that bookings, including business travel, have remained strong despite the weak economy.

It predicted that revenue trends will continue to improve in the fourth quarter.

Travel drops off during the fall and winter months, but the real key for Southwest and its competitors is whether that decline will be worse than usual this year because of the stubbornly weak economy.

Southwest indicated that those fears might not come true. Based on October sales and booking, the company said it expects "solid" growth in revenue for each mile that passengers fly in the fourth quarter. That number is a closely watched measurement of demand in the airline industry.

Yet, Southwest also launched a broad and deep airfare sale this week, which could indicate that it has more empty seats than it would like during the dead weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and after the New Year's holiday.

AirTran Airways joined in the sale. Southwest completed the $1 billion purchase of AirTran in May and gained a valuable foothold in Atlanta.

Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said Thursday that the company has already saved $60 million in annual costs by renegotiating AirTran contracts and cutting overhead and expects to eventually save $400 million a year. But Southwest has run into unexpected roadblocks in merging the two carriers, including opposition among union leaders at AirTran to a plan for combining pilot workforces.

Pilots at both airlines are now voting on a new plan for combining the groups. Southwest has raised the possibility of operating AirTran separately if the deal is voted down.
