By msnbc.com news services

U.S. workers were more efficient in the last three months of 2011, but their gains in productivity were slower than during the prior quarter, according to new data from the Labor Department.

Worker productivity increased at a 0.7 percent annual rate from October to December, less than a downwardly revised 1.9 percent in the previous three-month period.?

4 easy ways to save on ski trips

Save money by going where the crowds aren't, and go when they aren't there. Also consider picking a B-list peak to save money.

?

By Brad Tuttle, Budget Travel

Skiing has a reputation as a pricey, perhaps even snobby sport. But even if some skiers seem to have their noses raised in the air, there's no reason to pay through the nose to ski.

Here are four easy strategies to keep the costs of skiing in check:

Ski packages
Ski resorts and mountain towns hate for precious winter weeks to pass by while area hotel rooms remain empty. To attract skiers and boarders to the slopes, as well as?nearby restaurants and hotels, just about every resort offers a constantly shifting roster of hotel-lift ticket packages. They're often terrific values, especially during midweek and early- and late-season periods when hotels struggle to fill rooms. Sometimes, the price you'll pay for lodging and a lift ticket is nearly as cheap as what it'd cost just to buy a lift ticket on the spot. To scope out packages, check out ski resort websites, specialists like Ski the Rockies, state ski association sites such as Ski Utah, and, of course, Budget Travel's Real Deals.

Discount lift tickets
Before embarking on any ski trip in which lift tickets aren't included, take a moment to visit a website such as Liftopia or LiftTickets.com. These sites sell lift passes at dozens of North American resorts for a fraction of the price you'd pay at the mountain-side ticket counter. Discounts start at around 15 percent, and range as high as 70 percent, with the bigger discounts available for off-peak times paid for well in advance. The one catch with discounted tickets purchased at such sites is that they must be paid for ahead of time, and cancellations or changes are not allowed. It's also worth looking into lift ticket discounts provided by resort websites; some mountains will likewise knock off a few bucks, especially for multi-day passes, for visitors who buy online ahead of time.

?

Lift packs, ski cards
Consider packs of four or six passes and frequent-skier cards as the equivalent of a "buy in bulk" discount. For the former, a resort (or perhaps several resorts) sells a packet of lift tickets that can be used throughout the season for a price much less than it'd cost to buy tickets individually. Frequent-skier cards, by contrast, are sold for a flat fee (perhaps $50 or $75), and then grant the holder discounts on every day skied that season (perhaps 20 percent off weekends, 50 percent off weekdays). The main downside for these packs and passes is that they limit where you ski. Also, in many cases, these options are often only available for sale early in the season. This isn't always the case, though. For example, in New Hampshire, Cannon Mountain's 10 Pack can be purchased at any time: $579 for 10 fully interchangeable adult lift tickets, giving a discount of more than $10 per ticket off the usual price ($68).

Going against the grain
It's hard to say which is worse about an overly crowded ski resort. The masses of people clogging up cafeterias, lift lines and narrow ski trails are bad enough. Then, there's the knowledge that you're paying top dollar to boot. With some flexibility, careful planning, and a small degree of sacrifice, though, there's a solution for beating skiing's big crowds and bigger prices. The solution boils down to: Go where the crowds aren't, and go when they aren't there. After skiing during a blissfully empty midweek, non-holiday period, it's hard to go back to elbowing for space (and usually, paying extra) on a peak weekend. So take a day (or three) off from work; you won't regret it.

Also, consider going against the grain by picking an off-peak peak. Rather than sticking solely with the Vails and Big Skys of the skiing world, check out smaller B-list mountains like Montana's Bridger Bowl and Colorado's Wolf Creek, where the terrain is superb, the atmosphere is not remotely stuff, and lift tickets top out at $48 and $54, respectively.

U.S. Navy, Marines say more capable arms offset cuts (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Senior officials from the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps said on Tuesday that growing capabilities of new weapons systems could help offset cuts in defense spending that will shrink the number of ships and aircraft in coming years.

Lieutenant General Dennis Hejlik, head of Marine Corps Forces Command, said some big programs such as the V-22 tilt-rotor aircraft would face cuts in the future, but the service would still be able to respond to crises around the world.

"We might not have the capacity overall, but we're going to have the capability to respond to contingency plans," Hejlik told reporters in Washington.

He gave no details about Pentagon plans to reduce a proposed multiyear purchase of 122 V-22 aircraft built by Boeing Co and Bell Helicopter, a unit of Textron Inc. Hejlik added that details of those cuts and others would be released with the Pentagon's budget plan for fiscal 2013 on February 13.

U.S. defense contractors cite increasing pressure on sales and earnings given plans by the U.S. military, the world's biggest weapons buyer, to reduce spending by almost $500 billion over the next decade.

Hejlik and Admiral John Harvey, head of U.S. Fleet Forces Command, underscored their commitment to ensuring that U.S. military forces would be properly staffed, equipped and trained before they were sent overseas, despite the budget cuts.

Both officials highlighted the increasing capabilities of weapons systems, and said U.S. ships would continue to evolve over time, which could help offset a reduction in total numbers.

For instance, budget pressures had reduced the number of U.S. amphibious ships, but many now had small unmanned vehicles on board that could augment a ship's intelligence and surveillance work, said Hejlik, who plans to retire this summer.

The Navy would also use transport or "sealift" ships to augment the shrinking amphibious fleet, which is being scaled back to a target of 33 ships from the previous target of 38 ships.

"Would we like to have more money? Sure -- everyone would, but that's where innovation comes from, when you're stressed a little bit as far as money and time," Hejlik said. "If there's one good thing with less money, is it really makes you think."

Harvey, whose successor was nominated last week by President Barack Obama, said upgrades to existing ships could help ensure that U.S. forces could still carry out their missions.

SHIP MODERNIZATION SEEN AS KEY

"We'd like to have more (ships), we don't always get that, Harvey said. "But one thing we can do ... is to make sure that we evolve those ships, that we modernize those ships to face the threats that we see coming our way," Harvey said.

He said Admiral Jonathan Greenert had initiated a force structure review that would revise the Navy's target for the size of its fleet from the current target of 313 ships.

"Circumstances have now changed. Our strategy shift -- our pivot is taking place," Harvey said, noting that the final number depended on the assumptions used in the review.

Pentagon budget plans released last week called for cuts to several ship programs over the next five years, including eight fewer Joint High Speed Vessels built by Austal, the delay of one Virginia-class submarine, and two fewer Littoral Combat Ships.

Harvey said the budget would include funding for a new class of ships called mobile landing platforms, but he gave no details.

Harvey said Navy officials were overhauling the USS Ponce, a 1970 amphibious transport ship that will sail for the Middle East region by June 1 to combat enemy mines.

The ship, envisioned to launch small boats and up to four MH-53 helicopters, would serve as a bridge to the new mobile landing platform program, he said.

He said the Ponce was not intended as a "mothership" for elite U.S. special forces conducting operations in the region, as some media reports suggested this weekend.

"I think they put two and two together and got 22," he said, although he acknowledged that the terms for the conversion of the ship did require certain security measures that would allow special operations forces to work from the ship.

'Intervention': Son's Attempted Suicide Not Enough To Get Suzon Off Of Crack Cocaine (VIDEO)

Teenage son Bradley watched his mother Suzon go from a classic modern-day soccer mom to a crack addict selling prescription drugs to afford her next score. She became addicted to crack cocaine only two years prior, and in that time any normalcy in her life has been completely lost. On "Intervention" (Mon., 10 p.m. EST on A&E), he revealed that the situation at home got so difficult for him emotionally, that he attempted suicide a year ago.

Even worse, this incident only sobered his mother for two months before she relapsed back into her addiction. "That couldn't even bring her to her knees, to see her son literally almost dead," he said. If that wasn't her rock bottom, how were they going to possibly help her?

To make matters even more difficult, Suzon's mother holds a lot of resentment toward her daughter. The anger she gets from her mother pushes Suzon's stress levels, which leads her to use. Thinking about having chosen drugs over her three children causes Suzon to use. This intervention was possibly her last chance.

When her mother tried to hijack the intervention itself and make it about her, she was only going to push Suzon right back into the drugs that she uses already. Luckily, this time there was a professional, Candy Finnigan, on-hand to try and keep her focused -- as well as suggesting that she may well be co-dependent. Because of that, Suzon was convinced to go to rehab, and appears to be well on her way to getting her life and family back.

After a failed suicide attempt of her own after Suzon's intervention, her mother wound up in therapy and is learning how better to cope with her emotions and relationships as well.

"Intervention" airs Mondays at 10 p.m. EST on A&E.

Money Management: Benefits of investing in emerging markets

By Marijoyce Ryan
Posted: 5:37 pm Tue, January 31, 2012

Marijoyce Ryan

Over the course of many years, the concept of investing in emerging markets seemed, well, foreign to many. Terms such as exotic, risky, third-world, etc. were associated with it. Now, emerging markets are popular with investors seeking wealth preservation and growth. Let?s take a look at what are emerging markets.

The term emerging markets was coined by the World Bank?s International Finance Corporation in the early 1980s. Typically, emerging markets are countries in the process of industrialization, with the potential of higher gross domestic product growth per capita than more developed countries.

Generally speaking, emerging markets are identified by a growing population experiencing a substantial increase in living standards and income, solid economic growth and a relatively stable currency. Some examples of emerging markets include China, India, Taiwan, Indonesia, Russia, Czech Republic, Turkey, Brazil and Chile, among others.

Over the five-year period ending 2010, the average annual GDP of the United States was 0.9 percent. Compare that to the same data of the following countries:

Russia???? 3.6 %
China????? 11.2 %
India?????? 8.3 %
Brazil????? 4.5 %
Turkey???? 3.1 %
Malaysia? 4.4 %

As a whole, emerging markets as a percent of the world?s GDP went from 32 percent in 2000 to 45 percent in 2010. In contrast, the developed North American economies decreased from 33 percent to 26 percent over the same time frame (according to Bloomberg Finance LP).

As the emerging economies of the world continue to grow, consumption of all goods and services increases ? thereby increasing demand. While these markets have experienced higher volatility in their equity returns, they have also produced better long term returns than have the collective markets of the developed economies (Morningstar data through 2010).

See the equity performance numbers below:

? Emerging Markets United States Market
Past 20 Years 12.2% 9.1%
Past 10 Years 16.2% 1.4%
Past 5 Years 13.1% 2.3%

Contributing to the return of emerging market equities is currency translation. As the U.S. dollar decreases versus other currencies, it enhances the return because when gains are taken in emerging markets and converted back to dollars, the investor receives more dollars. The reverse is true as well. Currency is one of many risks. Others include political and social events/problems, taxes, liquidity and other restrictions.

So, what is the message to the average investor? As part of a prudently diversified portfolio, one should have exposure to emerging markets for the long term benefits of wealth preservation and creation. The key is ?long term.? This implies multiple years ? not months. Over the course of many years, the impact of volatility is diminished. As the migration of growth and wealth creation is moving to the emerging markets, so too should investors allocate assets to those markets. Over a 20-year period, emerging market stocks have produced superior returns to not only our stock market but also to the international developed markets. This relationship should continue in the future.

A skilled investment manager can assist you in navigating investment risks and recommending the appropriate level of emerging market allocation for your portfolio.
